      Currently, it’s the variety of kinds of planet that we see. Different masses, different sizes, different temperatures, different distances from the star, *very* different histories. Thousands of exoplanets known so far, none of them very much like Earth. It suggests that the conditions for our kind of life may be very rare.

      One of the key goals of the Plato mission is to find planets that really are Earth-like.
